Quellen zur Geschichte des Königlichen Nationaltheaters zu Berlin werden erstmals erfaßt und zu einer Chronik zusammengefügt. Im Rahmen einer Monographie sollen sie ausgewertet werden. Die Chronik bildet die Materialgrundlage für eine Geschichte des Nationaltheaters.

Innerhalb der Monographie soll das Theater in seinen Beziehungen und Wechselwirkungen zu Staat und Publikum gezeigt werden. Aufgrund der Überlieferungslage der Quellen soll die Chronik die Zeit bis zur Zusammenführung des Nationaltheaters mit der Hofoper zu den Königlichen Schauspielen im Jahre 1811 dokumentieren, während die Monographie im Jahre 1786 einsetzen soll.

Das Projekt wird aus zwei Teilen bestehen, einer Chronik des Theaters und einer Monographie über das Theater. Die Chronik wird als Datenbank angelegt, so daß sie mit den bestehenden Datenbanken der "Berliner Klassik" verknüpft werden kann. In die Datenbank werden die Theaterzettel, Rezensionen und andere Veranstaltungen im Hause des Nationaltheaters eingegeben. Die Theaterzettel, als wichtigster Informationsträger, werden detailliert aufgenommen, so daß mit Hilfe der Datenbank z. B. nach Titeln, Schauspielern, Autoren, Komponisten Auswertungen vorgenommen werden können. Die Monographie über die Geschichte des Theaters soll im wesentlichen das Material der Chronik auswerten, darüber hinaus aber auch die Theaterakten im Geheimen Preußischen Staatsarchiv sowie Rezeptionszeugnisse von Theaterbesuchern berücksichtigen

A melting pot of urban social gathering

For the first time, sources of information about the history of the Royal National Theatre in Berlin are being tapped and pieced together in a chronicle. They will also be evaluated within the framework of a monograph. The chronicle builds the material foundation for a history of the Royal National Theatre. In the monograph, it will be portrayed in the context of its relations and interactions with the State and the public. On the basis of the source records that have been handed down, the monograph will take 1786 as its starting point, whereas the chronicle will document the period from 1800 to 1811, when the Royal National Theatre’s era came to an end.

The project consists of two parts: a chronicle of the theatre, and a monograph about the theatre. The chronicle is set up as a database that can be linked to existing databases of the “Berliner Classic” project, and captures data from theatre leaflets, reviews, and documentation of other events staged in the Royal National Theatre. Theatre leaflets, as they are the most important source of information, are being registered in detail so that analyses, e.g. using selection criteria such as title, performer, author, composer etc., can be carried out with the help of the database. The monograph about the history of the theatre will evaluate the material in the chronicle. Furthermore, it will also take into account the theatre files housed in the Secret Central Archives (Geheimen Preußischen Staatsarchiv) as well as records of the response of theatre audiences.
